Q: I have been training for 3 years. I eat clean and do plenty of cardio. All I want is a six pack and it is the one thing I can't seem to muster! How did you get your abs so defined?

A: First and foremost the truth of the matters is that your genetic muscular makeup is going to play a huge role in this area. I have trained people that get the leanest, tightest, hardest abdominals without the six pack look. If underneath it all you do not have the separated “six-pack” muscular predisposition, nothing you do will get them. Tight flat abs are sexy no matter what way you slice the bread. Concentrate on making yours the best you can and not on trying to get a “look” that you can not physically achieve. I have had my “six-pack” since I was about 12. The combination of gymnastics and soccer, not to mention the dancing and tennis, developed my muscles early in life. I knew at that age I wanted to maximize what I was given.  I have continued into my adult life training and eating right so as to maintain and build upon what I started with as a kid. My abs have matured and look much fuller today then back then, simply due to years of training them and learning from mistakes (in diet and exercise) what works for me and what doesn't. Keeping a journal is essential for progress!
Q: What kind of supplements, if any, do you take?
A: I have through the years tried them all! At least it seems that way. This is what I have learned; different supplements work differently for different people. Ok, that doesn't help…let me explain. Having tried many of the “energy” products out there I can tell which ones worked for ME and which did not. You ask my husband the same question and he will tell you that the same products I love don't do squat for him! Our body's hormonal makeup and many other factors play in wither or not a product will work for you. The best advice I can give is this: try them! But most importantly keep a journal of the results. In a relatively short period of time you will figure out what works for you and what does not. Check out what I personally take on my supplements page.
Q: As a guy the one thing I hear all the time from women is how hot abs are. I am only 23, but after 4 years of partying in college I have nothing but a keg around my waist! I don't want to stop drinking my beer but have to do something with my gut. Any suggestions?
A: Hmmmm where do I start? Partying and drinking with the guys may be fun, but would it not be more fun if the women joined the party? I have the feeling you have simply become a tad bit lazy. You asked the question, I will be honest J At your age, drinking a few beers (even a few too many from time to time) will not give you a keg belly. MODERATION my friend in need. Get to the gym and burn some of those excess calories that you are consuming. My guess is that your diet may need some cleaning up as well. Just for an experiment stop fast food all together. That includes frozen pizza rolls! Start hitting the gym just 3 days a week and put in some time on the cardio equipment. Begin a weight training routine. If you totally do not know where to begin hire a trainer for a few sessions. Up your amount of protein, chicken, eggs, steak (not fired!) and choose complex cards over simple. Have as many veggies as you want and with all the strength you can muster avoid dessert. Even if you continue to drink I promise you will see your abs in no time. Moderation of diet and exercise AND drinking can still produce a healthy body…..healthier anyway than drinking and being totally sedentary.
Q:  I have a bad habit of starting and stopping my gym routine. I feel so good when I am going but right as I start to get the results I want I stop going and fall back into all my unhealthy habits. What do I do?
A: This is what you do…..stick to it! I have a feeling you indulge in all things that taste and feel good until you look in the mirror and decide you have had it. I have done it before so that is why I say that. Stop the ugly cycle. You need to make a decision now; to feel and look amazing or over eat on junk and avoid the gym leaving you feeling miserable. I think you will do the first! It is a mind set you need to accept. Do not go on a gym binge to fix bad habits, make the gym part of your life. NO crash diets, lifestyle change my friend. Once you decide to get fit, start on that healthy path and do not change lanes! Keep at it and in a few months it will be your new habit, and an advantageous one at that.
